Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has responded to actor Anupam Kher after the latter slammed him for criticizing the 2019 biographical film, The Accidental Prime Minister. The film, which Kher starred in as former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, has been a subject of debate since its release.

The disagreement started when journalist Vir Sanghvi posted a tweet criticizing the film, calling it one of the “worst Hindi movies ever made” and suggesting that it misrepresented the former Prime Minister. Sanghvi also mentioned that the film used media to tarnish Singh’s image. Hansal Mehta, agreeing with Sanghvi’s viewpoint, simply tweeted “+100.”

This comment did not sit well with Anupam Kher, who took to social media to call Hansal Mehta a “hypocrite.” Kher pointed out that Mehta had worked as the Creative Director on The Accidental Prime Minister and had been present during the entire shoot, providing creative inputs. He accused Mehta of double standards for criticizing the film now after being involved in its production.
Hansal Mehta Owns His Mistakes
In response to Kher’s remarks, Hansal Mehta clarified his position on the issue. In a tweet, Mehta admitted to his mistake, stating, “Of course I own my mistakes, Mr. Kher. And I can admit that I made a mistake. Can’t I, sir?” He emphasized that his involvement in the film was purely professional, and while he did his job with commitment, it did not mean he had to defend the film afterward.
Mehta also expressed his disappointment at Kher for evaluating others using the same standards by which Kher evaluates himself. He maintained that his objectivity should not be compromised by his earlier involvement in the film.
The Controversy Over The Accidental Prime Minister
The Accidental Prime Minister stirred controversy upon its release, with many critics questioning its portrayal of the political figures involved, particularly Manmohan Singh. Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, the film starred Anupam Kher as Singh and featured Hansal Mehta in a supporting role as Naveen Patnaik. The film also starred Akshaye Khanna, Suzanne Bernert, Arjun Mathur, and Aahana Kumra in key roles.
The movie was a polarizing topic, with some viewing it as an attempt to sensationalize real political events, while others criticized it for its perceived bias. Despite the ongoing debates, both Mehta and Kher have continued to defend their professional contributions to the project, albeit from differing viewpoints.
