Rice ATM:
The machine, set up at a warehouse in Macheswar, is meant to make it easier to distribute rice from the Public Distribution System (PDS).
You might have seen many dispensing machines before, but this is a completely new concept. Instead of dispensing snacks or drinks, this machine will dispense rice. It will use biometrics and your government-issued ration card to provide rice. Each card can dispense up to 25 kg of rice at a time.

What good it will do to the society:
- This machine will make getting rations much easier because customers will have to spend less time in line. They can use the ATM machine to collect their rations based on their needs.
- This will also reduce the theft of rations, as only ration cardholders will be able to withdraw rice from the ATM after biometric authentication.
- If this concept proves successful, it could be implemented in other states across India as well, though it is currently only being launched by the Odisha government.
Inauguration of rice ATM
On Thursday, Odisha’s Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra, inaugurated India’s first rice ATM in Bhubaneswar.
The machine, installed at a warehouse in Mancheswar, is aimed at simplifying the distribution of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice.
Conclusion:
This concept is a great initiative by the Odisha government to provide convenience to the public and to prevent ration theft. If it shows positive results in Odisha, it could be adopted in other states across the country, allowing people there to benefit from this facility as well.
